No Heating and Hot water Boiler Has Low Pressure

No heating and hot water, Help! Heating and hot water are absolutely crucial part of our daily life. Especially in winter months we can’t imagine living without heating or hot water in our property.

There are number of reasons why you have no heating or hot water and why your boiler is not working. One of the common one, however is that over time the pressure in your boiler drops and makes your boiler stop working. Pressure of 1.50 bar is essential for most of the boilers to operate properly. This is why it is important to have your boiler serviced regularly ( at least once a year). As part of service, gas engineer will also top up the pressure. Pressure must be checked especially when the summer months are over and we turn our heating for the first time. Otherwise during a cold winter night you might get a surprise and there will be no heating or hot water.

It is very easy to top up the pressure in your boiler. So if your boiler has stopped working, first thing you need to check is the pressure. Most of the boilers have a round pressure gauge, having two needles, red and a black. Red is only there for reference and blank one is the one which measures actual pressure. You will notice it have dropped below 0.5 bar or is at 0. Secondly you need to locate where the filling loop is to fill the pressure. Some boilers come with the filling loop and will be next to the other knobs underneath the boiler. Some loops are installed by the engineers. It is basically a link between the cold water water ( normally 15mm) and the return pipe ( normally 22mm) of the heating system. There will be a flexible silver pipe with a knob at each end. All you have to go is to open both of them. You will hear water going into the system and the needle will start going upwards.  Once the black needle reaches 1.5 bar, then turn both the knobs to close position. Job done! You will hear the boiler firing up when you demand heating or hot water. Please note that some of the boilers have digital display that tell you the pressure. One thing to be very careful about is to never leave the filling loop open, otherwise it will damage the boiler due to high pressure. To check that the taps are fully closed, please look at the pressure guage and ensure that the pressure is now static after you have closed both knobs.
