How to Run Your Heating System Efficiently: Expert Guidance from a Heating Engineer

With energy costs at record highs, running your heating system efficiently isn’t just a good idea — it’s essential for comfort, safety, and savings. As a heating engineer, I’ve seen countless homes waste money simply because systems weren’t being used or maintained correctly. The good news? A few smart adjustments can dramatically improve efficiency and reduce your energy bills.

1. Know Your System

Before making changes, understand what type of heating system you have:

  • Combi boiler – provides heat and hot water on demand
  • System or regular boiler – uses a cylinder for hot water
  • Heat pump – runs at lower temperatures but continuously

Each behaves differently, so always check your boiler manual for recommended settings.

2. Lower the Flow Temperature

For modern condensing boilers, lowering the flow temperature maximises condensation efficiency and reduces gas usage.

  • Radiators: 55°C–65°C
  • Underfloor heating: 35°C–45°C

If rooms don’t warm enough, increase slightly.

3. Use Smart or Programmable Controls

A smart thermostat learns your routine and heats only when needed.

  • Create heating schedules
  • Avoid manual on/off cycling
  • Use zoning if available

4. Maintain a Consistent Temperature

Heating a cold home from scratch uses more energy than maintaining a steady moderate temperature.

  • Day: 18°C–20°C
  • Night: 16°C–18°C

If away for long periods in winter, set to 15°C to avoid freezing/damp issues.

5. Bleed Radiators & Balance System

Cold spots? Likely air or imbalance.

  • Bleed radiators
  • Balance system for even heat distribution

A balanced system heats faster and uses less energy.

6. Improve Insulation & Reduce Draughts

Efficiency isn’t just about the boiler — retaining heat is critical.

  • Insulate pipes
  • Draught-proof doors and windows
  • Fit reflector panels behind radiators on external walls

7. Set TRVs Properly

Thermostatic radiator valves allow room-by-room control.

  • Living areas: 19°C–21°C
  • Bedrooms: 16°C–18°C
  • Spare rooms: Low setting (not OFF – prevents mould)

8. Annual Service & System Cleanliness

A serviced system is safer and more efficient.

  • Annual boiler service
  • Flush system if sludged
  • Fit a magnetic filter

A dirty heating system can waste up to 30% more energy.

9. Efficient Hot Water Use

For cylinder systems:

  • Water temp: 55°C–60°C
  • Use timed heating

For combis, avoid running taps unnecessarily — it fires the boiler each time.

10. Upgrade When Needed

If your boiler is 10+ years old, upgrading can save money long-term.

Modern systems allow:

  • Better efficiency
  • Smart control compatibility
  • Lower carbon footprint
